Background of the Study
Chemotherapy administration is an essential treatment modality for cancer patients, and its effectiveness is highly dependent on the accurate delivery of prescribed regimens. However, chemotherapy drugs are potent, and their administration poses significant risks not only to patients but also to healthcare workers if proper safety protocols are not followed. Nurses, as key healthcare providers in oncology settings, are responsible for ensuring that chemotherapy is administered safely, including verifying the correct medication, dosage, and patient, as well as monitoring for any adverse reactions during and after administration.
Kano State General Hospital is one of the major healthcare institutions in northern Nigeria, offering a comprehensive range of oncology services, including chemotherapy. However, there is concern about the level of adherence to safety protocols during chemotherapy administration at the hospital. These protocols, which are designed to protect both patients and healthcare workers, include guidelines for personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, proper handling and disposal of chemotherapy drugs, and protocols for managing chemotherapy-related emergencies. This study will evaluate nurses' adherence to these safety protocols in the chemotherapy administration process at Kano State General Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role nurses play in ensuring the safe administration of chemotherapy, there is a lack of research on their adherence to established safety protocols at Kano State General Hospital. Non-adherence to safety protocols could expose both healthcare workers and patients to serious health risks, including chemotherapy drug contamination, patient harm, and occupational health hazards. It is essential to evaluate whether nurses at Kano State General Hospital consistently follow these protocols to ensure patient safety and minimize risks associated with chemotherapy.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate nurses' adherence to safety protocols in chemotherapy administration at Kano State General Hospital.
2. To assess the level of training and resources available to nurses for ensuring adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols.
3. To identify factors that influence nurses' adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols at Kano State General Hospital.
Research Questions
1. To what extent do nurses adhere to safety protocols in chemotherapy administration at Kano State General Hospital?
2. What level of training and resources do nurses at Kano State General Hospital have to support adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols?
3. What factors influence nurses' adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols at Kano State General Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Kano State General Hospital demonstrate a high level of adherence to safety protocols in chemotherapy administration.
2. Adequate training and resources contribute to improved adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols among nurses at Kano State General Hospital.
3. Factors such as workload, staff shortages, and lack of proper PPE negatively affect nurses' adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols at Kano State General Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in oncology departments at Kano State General Hospital, evaluating their adherence to safety protocols in chemotherapy administration. Limitations may include the variability in adherence levels across different departments, reliance on self-reporting from nurses, and potential biases in reporting adherence levels.
Definitions of Terms
